James William Hobson II (Jimmy) was born June 14,1949, the only child of James William and Gertrude Hobson, at Meharry Hospital in Nashville, TN. He attended Nashville Public Schools and graduated from Cameron High School. At an early age, Jimmy’s love for music was sparked by him and his father spending time listening to music together. That led to him playing the trumpet and landing a spot as a drum major with the Cameron High School Band. Even to this day, Jimmy’s music collection is massive consisting of CD’s, vinyl’s and even 45’s.
Shortly after graduating he was drafted by the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1971. Once he returned, he worked different jobs to save enough money to attend college and ultimately enrolled at Tennessee State University graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Architectural Engineering in 1980. Upon graduating, he moved to Atlanta, GA and worked as a project architect for Williams-Russell and Johnson Inc. until 1987 and from there he became a Coordinator of Planning and Architecture for Atlanta Public Schools.
To maintain his spiritual foundation, in 1985, he joined St. Philip A.M.E. church, later served as a trustee and maintained his membership until his passing. After over 25 years in architectural project management, Jimmy retired in 2012 and took time to do the things he enjoyed like tennis, bicycling, running marathons and his passion, photography.
But what he loved the most was his mother. Jimmy was devoted to his mother (Gertrude) and to taking care of her. As she aged (she is now 101 years old), he spent a lot of time traveling between Nashville and Atlanta so that she could stay connected to her home and family. Jimmy cared for his friends and maintained contact with many of them for as many as 50 years. He will be lovingly remembered and forever missed.
Preceding Jimmy in death are his father, James William Hobson Sr., maternal and paternal grandparents.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving mother, Gertrude Hobson, a host of relatives and treasured friends.
