Ruby Neil Hicks, a beloved matriarch and beacon of light, was born on May 10, 1933, in Hickman County, Tennessee, to Otto and Dochia Ghant Johnson. She attended O.H. Bernard High School in Hickman County and later married the love of her life, James (Jimmy) Hicks, on June 12, 1967. Together, they built a life rooted in faith, love, and a deep commitment to family and community.
Ruby's professional journey began as a compassionate nurse at General Hospital, where she dedicated herself to the care and comfort of her patients. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond the hospital walls when she transitioned into entrepreneurship, operating B&M Market in Nashville for over 40 years. This establishment was more than a business; it was a community hub, known for Ruby's warm hospitality and kindness. Generations of families from the Whites Creek/Trinity Hills neighborhood fondly remember "Miss Ruby" and the kindness she extended to all.
A woman of deep faith, Ruby was baptized in hope in Christ at Pleasant Union Church of Christ in Hampshire, TN. Ruby was actively involved in church ministries (O.W.L.S.) and various community organizations such as United School Workers and the Hickman County Organization where she served as treasurer for 20 years, always ensuring that the scholarship recipients received their monies in time for college. Her unwavering devotion to God was reflected in her every action, and she served as a guiding light and pillar of strength for all who knew her.
Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, husband and five siblings: Robert, Harold, Vaughn, Clark, and Sonjie Johnson. She leaves behind a legacy of love and grace, cherished by her surviving sisters, Cleo Johnson and Linda Terrell. Ruby is remembered and honored by her nephews and nieces—Kenny, Sandra, Deborah, Luis (Mary Frances), Carol, Patrick, and Levi (Lauren)—as well as numerous great-nieces, great-nephews as well as great-great nieces and nephews, cousins, and devoted friends Alice Johnson and Lula Cathey.
Ruby Hicks will forever be remembered as a devoted servant of God, a compassionate soul, and a loving matriarch. Her legacy of kindness and dedication to her family and community will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing her.
