Roberta Taylor, affectionately known to family friends as Bert was born on November 18, 1933, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, to Melissa Butler and Jackson Turner. She passed on from this life on Tuesday, December 17, 2024. Roberta was preceded in death by both parents, her husband, Willie Edward Taylor, and her daughter, Cleara Mai Harris.
Roberta professed her faith in Jesus Christ early in life and was an avid member, even in illness. She was a member of New Jerusalem Primitive Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Elder Willie D. Cannon, before joining her husband at Flint Valley United Primitive Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Elder William A. Stratton. Bert was a faithful servant who was proud to be an usher. Though limited mobility diminished her ability to attend physically over the last two years, it did not lessen her love for Flint Valley or Big Harpeth UPB Association. Her unwavering dedication was evident in her service. Roberta’s service in the Big Harpeth UPB Association Ushers’ Union spanned more than 50 years. She also took part in Big Harpeth Deacons’ Wives.
Roberta was educated in the Rutherford County Public School System. She was united in holy matrimony with Willie, whom she lovingly called Bill, on August 29, 1954. The couple reared four children: Pat, Cleara Mai, Sam, and Janet. The couple’s five-generation family lineage presently reflects seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Roberta was a retiree of Metropolitan Nashville Davidson County. She began working at the Metro Health Department in 1980 and later transitioned to Bordeaux Hospital, where she ended her career after more than 15 years of service. Bert enjoyed traveling and would often speak of her travels nationally and abroad. She LOVED church, going out to eat with family and friends, and playing bingo… IN THAT ORDER!
Although we grieve our loss, we hold steadfast in our faith in the Lord, for the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away. Bert will be missed and fondly remembered by her children, Patricia Turner, Sam Taylor, Janet (David) Williams of Elgin, SC; grandchildren, Gail (Kerry) Claybrooks, Darrin (Lejandra) Turner Sr., David (Angela) Williams III of Savannah, GA, Jason (Shannon) Williams Sr. of Irmo, SC, Adam Taylor, Jacob Harris, and Jillian Harris; great-grandchildren, Alyssa Claybrooks, Darius Hooten, Darrin Turner Jr., Kyhdri (Haleigh) Evans-Jones, Brandon Turner, Bethany Hillard of Columbia, SC, Jaden Warner, Jason Williams Jr. of Irmo, SC, McKinnley Williams of Savannah, GA, and Amari Taylor; and great-great-grandchildren, Tru Hooten and Amelia Williams of Irmo, SC.; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Roberta also leaves devoted friends Hattie Gardner Terrell, Frances Owens, and Georgia Cox to cherish her memory.
