Reverend Dennis Rostell Sweatt, Jr. was born to Dennis Sweatt, Sr. and Dorothy Talley Sweatt of Dickson, Tennessee, on December 29, 1948. The second child of this union. Rev. Sweatt was called home to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, April 28, 2024 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Dennis, Jr. was educated in the Dickson County school systems before moving to Nashville, Tennessee. He graduated from North High School
and entered Tennessee State University. He united with the Fourteenth Avenue Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Felton Price.
Dennis Jr. continued his work in the church by fulfilling the Great Commission mandate to teach others the ways of Jesus Christ. He was the youth Sunday School Teacher for many years. After he no longer taught Sunday School he continued to come and be apart to this teaching ministry.
Dennis Jr. loved young people and would often host youth outings at his home with music, movies and plenty of popcorn. He was Director of the Baptist Training Union (BTU) for many years always encouraging studying the word of God.
Dennis Jr. was a faithful member of the Fourteenth Avenue Evangelistic Team for many years seeking to win souls to Christ. After much prayer and failing health Dennis Jr. retired as Pastor Gordon’s Assistant and we celebrated with him on September 25, 2023 at a Retirement Gala given by his church family. As a self employed business owner, Dennis Jr. was always ready to help and encourage men released from prison telling them that they can be somebody. He would employ them and provide them with housing in property that he owned. Sometimes they paid little or no rent. That’s the man of God he was.
Dennis Jr. served as the Vice President of the Haynes Park Neighborhood Association for many years. The community received a grant for $260,000 because he refused to back down when the community needed the help.
Dennis Jr. was the first minister to serve as an associate to Pastor Gordon after being licensed by the church in 1981. He was later appointed to serve as Assistant to the Pastor in 1986 and served faithfully for 38 years until his retirement. Rev. Sweatt served his pastor and the entire congregation with much vigor out of love for God and for us all.
Dennis Jr. was preceded in death by his parents, Dennis and Dorothy Sweatt, Sr.
Leaving to cherish his memories are his devoted wife Ramona of twenty-six years; children: Ebony (Maurice) Clark, Donita Sweatt, Morycia Sweatt, John Bryant, Miata (Michael) Booker, Exondria, Arionna and Dennis Sweatt, III; grandchildren: Summar Moore, Tranisha Woods-Sweatt, Kori Sweatt, Amanda Sweatt, Makiyah Booker, Ezekiel and Eden Sweatt, siblings: Mother Mary R.
