Readus (“Sonny”) Westmoreland was born February 28, 1937 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee to the late Fred and Dorothy Wilson Westmoreland who preceded him in death. Readus was the fifth of thirteen children born to this union. He was preceded in death by siblings Fred Jr., Evelyn, Charlie Mae, Margaret Marie, Mary Lou, Willie Lee, Emma Jean, Almous, Joseph, William, Earnest and Sandra.
Readus was born to parents with a strong Christian commitment to the teachings of Jesus Christ. He followed their footsteps. He united with Olivet Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend J.T. Easley. He was a faithful member and served on the Usher Board until his health failed.
He was educated in the public schools of Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee. Readus was a proud 1957 graduate of Pearl High School. Being a very outgoing sportsman Readus participated in numerous sports, his favorite being baseball, where he excelled to the highest.
His employment opportunity was with the State of Tennessee, Department of Transportation for 35 years and retiring in 1996. He was a hard, dedicated worker who enjoyed his work and loved to talk and work with people. He never met a stranger. For his efforts he received many awards and certificates of appreciation for his many accomplishments. The Family feels very special to have been blessed with his presence in their lives. He gave of himself freely and added much joy and laughter to all that knew him. Readus will be forever remembered for his direct expressions, giving heart and high spirit.
He leaves to cherish his memories devoted children Bernice Whitaker and Ronald Westmoreland, Sr., devoted niece/daughter Karen Winters, loving and devoted sister Lillie Myers, devoted grandsons Ronald Jr. (affectionally called Top Soldier) and Donald Westmoreland, Marsalas and Michael Whitaker, great grandchildren, brother-in-law, Aaron Joyner, Portsmouth, VA; a host of nieces and nephews, many devoted cousins and friends. Longtime devoted family friends Charles and Dora Hemphill & Tommie and JoAnn Washington.
