Nettie Jo Scott, born in Wilson County, Tennessee, on February 8, 1941, to the late Odesser and Leroy Green, passed away peacefully in Atlanta, Georgia, on April 21, 2025, at the age of 84.
A devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Nettie’s life was one marked by compassion, dedication, high expectations/standards, and resilience. She attended Metro Nashville Schools and went on to earn her nursing degree from Meharry School of Nursing, followed by a degree from Tennessee State University. Her nursing career took her to various parts of the world, with notable stints in Nashville, Tennessee; Stuttgart, Germany; and San Francisco, California. Whether in the U.S. or abroad, Nettie’s commitment to caring for others was unwavering, and her legacy as a skilled and compassionate nurse continues to be remembered by all who worked with her.
Beyond her professional life, Nettie had a deep love for the arts and hands-on crafts. She was an accomplished seamstress, jewelry maker, and antique restoration enthusiast. Her garden, often full of flowers and vibrant plants, reflected her nurturing spirit.
Nettie was preceded in death not only by her parents Odesser and Leroy Green, but by her siblings Clarence, LeRoy, Ann, Mardra, Lloyd, Jean, Aubrey, daughter Marilyn and great-grandchild Ava.
Nettie was also a proud and loving mother of seven children for whom she set high marks and set the pace. The record reflects that her children fulfilled the promise. For there is no worldly affliction among them. Nettie set the mark that her children would be self-sufficient members of society. With her guidance, they raised the educational profile of the family from specialized craftmanship to Ed.Ds. This great mother raised valiant children: the late Kitty Ruth {Marilyn}, Cynthia (William) Hardy, Danny (Brenda) Davies, James (Rosa) Davies, Nettie Vaughn, Robert (Laurie) Scott, and Melanie (Greg) Dawson. Her legacy lives on through her 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild who remember her as a guiding force in their lives.
She leaves on earth her siblings James, Oma, Odessa, Jessie, Harvell, and Audrey. She also leaves behind a host of loving nieces and nephews.
Nettie’s strength, kindness, and determination touched the lives of many, and her memory will be cherished forever. She leaves behind a family who will carry forward her values of love, service, and creativity.
