Mary “Bicie” McKissack, a beloved wife, devoted mother, cherished grandmother, and dear friend, passed away on July 9th. Her absence leaves a void that can never be filled, but her memory will forever be engraved in our hearts. Mary was born on October 14, 1939, in Dunn, North Carolina, to Mary McAllister and Peter McCullum.
She was a woman of ambition and determination, graduating from Harnett High School in 1957. Continuing her pursuit of knowledge, she attended North Carolina Central College in Durham, North Carolina, where she embarked on her journey towards a bright future. Following her education, Mary ventured to New York City, where she embraced new opportunities and embarked on a path that would shape her life.
After moving to Franklin, Tennessee, she met the love of her life, Elijah “Eli” McKissack. They exchanged vows on December 24, 1960, and their union was a testament to the power of love and companionship. Mary dedicated three decades of her life to BellSouth Telecommunications, leaving a lasting impact through her unwavering commitment and diligent work ethic. Her colleagues and peers respected her professionalism and admired her dedication.
Mary's most significant joy in life came from her family. She and Eli were blessed with two loving sons, Corey and Darryl, who were a constant source of pride and joy. She reveled in the role of a nurturing and supportive mother, guiding them with love, wisdom, and unwavering support. As her family grew, Mary's heart expanded with love for her three grandchildren: Darryl Lamont , Kiona (Tristan), and Elijah. Their presence brought her immeasurable happiness, and she cherished every moment spent with them, nurturing their dreams and witnessing their accomplishments.
Mary leaves behind a family who will forever cherish her memory. She is survived by her brothers, Charlie (Rena), Nathaniel (Estell), Darrell (Lawanda), Frank, and sisters, Frances (James) Mitchell, and Anna Mae (Larry) Harrington, along with her in laws, devoted cousins, and friends Ross Mckissack Jr, Anna D Hunter, Betty Mckissack, John Hazel (Judy) Mckissack, Joann (Eddie) Childress, Dorethy Roberts, Deloise (Wayne) Polk, Barbara and Harold White, Saundra Washington, Bettye Burgess, Anita Bailey, Renonia Goodwin, and Dorethy Whitmore. Mary's presence will be missed dearly, but the love and bond shared with her family will endure through the cherished memories and values she instilled in each of them. Mary McKissack was an extraordinary woman whose warmth, kindness, and genuine compassion touched the lives of all who knew her. Her spirit was a source of comfort and inspiration to those around her. Mary's legacy will forever live on in the hearts of her loved ones, reminding us to embrace each day with love and gratitude, and to embrace each person with comfort and understanding. In honoring Mary's memory, we kindly request that you cherish your loved ones, hold them close, and extend acts of kindness to those in need. Let us remember Mary with fondness and celebrate her remarkable journey, knowing that she now rests in eternal peace.
