Joyce Locklayer was born in Nashville, Tennessee, December 4, 1930, to the late John Carpenter and Estella Holt Carpenter Pye.
Joyce was educated in the Nashville Public School System. She became a cosmetologist at the age of 16 and owned and operated her own shops in Tennessee and Indiana. She went to Carpenter School and became a Restoration Specialist in 1979. At the age of 55 she went back to school and became an Occupational Therapist Assistant and worked for the State of Tennessee until she retired at the age of 67.
She was baptized at Jefferson Street Church of Christ in 1939. She married Eugene Locklayer (deceased) in 1947.
Joyce was presently member of Schrader Lane Church of Christ and was a lifetime member of Ladies Association for Christian Education (LACE). She belonged to the Ladies Bible Class and worked in the Archives.
Joyce was a member of the Order of Eastern Star until she resigned in 2008 as United Supreme Grand Matron of the United States and South America. She was a member of AARP Meharry Chapter #2534. She also participated in many activities at Elizabeth Senior Citizen Center.
She loved gardening, arts and crafts and working with the elderly and children. She was the coordinator of the first Bicycle Motor Cross track in Tennessee.
Joyce leaves sister, Fannie Bishop of Detroit Michigan; Daughter, Francine Locklayer, Old Hickory, Tennessee; Sons: William (Cheryl) Holt, Warrington, PA, Anthony (Sylvia) Locklayer, Nashville; and Reverend Charleton (LaSondra) Cunningham, Beaufort, NC.
She was preceded in death by her brother, J.D. Carpenter; and Son, Robert Locklayer.
Joyce has 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.
