John Louis Cherry, Sr. was born June 19, 1947 in Arlington, Tennessee to the late Mr. Roosevelt Cherry, Sr. and Mrs.
Malinda Estella Johnson Cherry. John accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Fullview Missionary Baptist
Church in Memphis, TN. John was a graduate of Barret's Chapel High School. He received an agricultural scholarship from
Tennessee State University, which brought him to Nashville in 1965.
John was a veteran of the United States Army. He served in Vietnam and in the Tennessee Army National Guard. During
his time in the Army National Guard, John rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. and took pride in his unit role as a cook,
preparing meals for soldiers.
John joined the Metro Nashville Police Department in 1980 as a police officer and retired in 2000, with his final
assignment being in the Warrants Division. After retirement, John served on the Tennessee State University police
department, and worked security for Fisk University and Meharry Medical College.
John, also known as "Dedar" enjoyed cooking for his family. Many years of family gatherings in Nashville and Memphis
were blessed with his grilling and smoking skills.
John departed this life Thursday, December 7, 2023 at home in Nashville, TN. He is preceded in death by his brothers,
Roosevelt Cherry, Jr, Charles Cherry, and sister, Dorothy Coleman.
He leaves to cherish his memories, longtime partner of 41 years and caregiver of 5 years Charlesetta Hall; two sons, John
Louis (Regina) Cherry, Jr., Charles Louis Cherry of Nashville, TN; three daughters, Raynette Graham of Memphis, TN,
Leona Michelle (Andre) Howard, Johnella Renee Cherry, both of Nashville, TN; three granddaughters, Tondia Payne,
Tamesha Coleman, Tianna Hill, all of Memphis, TN; seven great grandchildren; two sisters, Ethel Ophelia Cannon of
Nashville, TN, Annie Lois Pinkston of Tallahassee, FL; sister-in-law, Charlotte Larange Cherry of Memphis, TN; mother of
John and Leona, Juanita Cherry of Nashville, TN; close friends, Lloyd (Tonya) Hall, Clinton Hall (Deceased), Kathy Hall, all
of Nashville, TN. He also leaves a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends to cherish his memories.
