Helen Smith Watson, born on October 8, 1929, peacefully passed away on April 19, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was born to Noah Hamp Smith and Minnie Folks and was the beloved sister of Mildred Smith, Henry Smith, and Bessie “Beth” Smith.
Helen was a dedicated educator who spent over 30 years teaching English in Metro Nashville public schools and retiring from Whites Creek Comprehensive High School in 1996. She received her education in Nashville public schools and graduated from Pearl High School. Helen furthered her education by obtaining a Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degree at Tennessee State University and pledged Alpha Chi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
She was a pillar of the community and touched the lives of countless students throughout her career.
In addition to her career, Helen was a devoted member of Jefferson Street Baptist, where she served on various committees and boards, as well as taught Sunday School. She was a faithful member of the church and found great joy in serving others. Helen was also a loving wife to William T Watson and a devoted mother to Janet W. Watson and William Watson Jr.
In her free time, Helen enjoyed reading, collecting coins, playing the piano and guitar, and spending time with her family. She had a passion for music and nature, and her presence brought warmth and joy to those around her.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, William T. Watson Sr, son William T. Watson Jr, daughter Janet W. Watson, brother Henry C. Smith, sister Mildred Smith, and granddaughter Janette Watson.
She is survived by her sister Bessie “Beth” Burton, granddaughter Jean Watson, son-in-law Griff Watson (Marian), niece Joan Jenkins (Carey), nephew Hollis T. Biffle Jr, (Angela Biffle) great nieces Candice Lane (Timothy Lane), Hollie C. Thomas, great nephew Kylan W. Jenkins, cousin Charlie James McCain, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Helen Smith Watson will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Her kindness, generosity, and unwavering faith will forever be remembered.
