Gertie Elizabeth Bowman Butler was born on February 4, 1936, she was the oldest of seven children, born to the union of Lillie Mae Bass- Bowman & Tom Bowman. A Native of Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee, Gertie accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and united with Edenwald Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a faithful member for about 45 years. She received her formal education in the Wilson County School Systems.
Gertie entered peacefully into rest on Tuesday, August 22nd, 2023 at Vanco Nursing Home in Madison, Tennessee.
Gertie was married to Thomas Ingle in her early young adult life. From this union she was blessed with two sons (Joe Thomas Ingle & George Wiley Ingle). She later met and remarried Robert Butler whom she loved and cherished until death. Prior to this, she was blessed with four additional children (Ruby, Mary, Alvin and Melvin).
Gertie was a hardworking and loving mother, wife, grandmother, sister and friend. She was employed with Metropolitan Head Start as a cook, bus driver, and eventually Family Service Caseworker for (38+ years), until her retirement. She was also a diligent Avon representative as well. She was a fun, independent, free spirit who liked to dance, cook, listen to gospel music, read her Bible, play cards, visit the sick, attend church and share laughs with family. Her greatest joys were her family. Especially her church family, children and grandchildren of whom she was extremely proud of. She loved sharing her knowledge and wisdom. Her love for her church was always unwavering and evident in the way she cared for and offered her help to others. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
