The Great Author of All records that Mrs. Esther Ruth Owens Buchannan, a cherished child of the Lord, was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was born in Fayetteville, Tennessee on May 24, 1941. She was the twelfth child born to her parents Roberta Massey Owens and Collier Owens. Esther was the last surviving sibling of her twelve sisters and brothers.
Esther received her education in the Nashville Public Schools District. In 1963, Esther married Walter Lee Buchanan. She was a loving and devoted mother for Pamela, Theresa, Priscilla, Lamont, Marcus, and Desmond.
Esther accepted Christ as her loving Savior and was baptized and became a member of Meharry Blvd Seventh-day Adventist church, which is now Hillcrest Seventh-day Adventist Church. She worked faithfully in the Lord's vineyard and was armed with her ubiquitous sense of service to others. Esther volunteered in the Community Service Center at Hillcrest. She would help community members find clothing, food, and other essentials that were needed. Uplift Ministries, which was under the leadership of Elder Alvin Bass, gave Esther the opportunity to prepare delicious and healthy meals for the homeless men who would visit on Tuesday nights during the winter months. Until her sudden illness, Esther would also drive her friends to church.
Esther's career included working for Aladdin Industries until her retirement. Because Esther adored children, she also spent time working for several daycare organizations in Nashville.
Esther loved life and had several hobbies she enjoyed. To begin with, she loved gardening. She especially loved taking care of roses. She believed that flowers brought true beauty to life. Esther also loved to cook for her siblings and her entire family. She never hesitated to let her family try her recipes. Of course, her family enjoyed all of her meals that were always prepared with love. Esther dedicated her life to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, all of her siblings, her friends, the community, and her heavenly Father. Her smile radiated the love of our Lord and everyone embraced her warmth.
Our Heavenly Father saw that Esther was weary. And so, on the morning of Wednesday, January 22, 2025, Esther went to sleep in her Savior's loving arms with a full belief that Jesus will return soon and resurrect her on that "Great Gettin 'Up Morning!"
Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Lee Buchanan; parents, Collier and Roberta Owens; and her siblings, Stella Owens Lamb, Adrue Owens Kercheval, Lorine Owens Parks, Moses Owens, David Owens, Betty Owens Jackson, Mildred Owens Thomison, Collier "June" Owens, Alease Owens Wilson, Paul Owens, Sam Owens, and Gloria Owens McCottry.
And now, as the Writer of Redemption brings the life chapter of Esther Owens Buchanan to an end, He remembers those who are left to cherish her memory: Esther's daughters Pamela Owens, Theresa Owens-Elliot, and Priscilla Owens; her sons Lamont (Regina) Buchanan, Marcus (Janet) Buchanan, and Desmond Buchanan; her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Finally, Esther also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
